How to Apply Sunscreen for Dry Skin

Start with clean, slightly damp skin. This helps lock in moisture and prevents sunscreen from clinging to dry patches.

Always moisturise first. Dry skin needs hydration before sun protection. Apply a lightweight but nourishing moisturiser and let it absorb for a minute. Skipping this step often leads to tightness or patchy application.

Use a hydrating sunscreen. Choose a formula designed for dry skin so it adds comfort instead of stripping moisture. Cream or lotion textures usually work better than gel-only formulas.

Apply enough sunscreen. Use about two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Using too little reduces protection and can make sunscreen harder to spread evenly on dry skin.

Dot, then gently spread. Place sunscreen on the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and neck, then spread softly using your fingers. Avoid rubbing aggressively, as this can lift dry flakes.

Let it settle for 30–60 seconds. This allows the sunscreen to form an even layer and prevents pilling under makeup.

If you wear makeup, press—don’t rub foundation or concealer on top. A sponge or gentle tapping motion helps keep sunscreen intact and avoids emphasising dry areas.

Reapply sunscreen by patting, not dragging. Use gentle presses when reapplying to avoid disturbing dry skin or makeup.

Your skin should feel comfortable and supple, not tight or flaky. If it feels dry after application, the sunscreen may not be suited for your skin type or you may need more moisturiser underneath.

Proper application makes sunscreen work better and for dry skin, it also helps your skin look and feel healthier through the day.
